Industrial Cleaning and Degreaser Solutions

CARDITE #422
Very Heavy Duty Liquid Detergent
USDA Authorized Nonflammable Degreaser

Removes all types of oily soils: vegetable oils, animal fats, petroleum products. Removes bakes-on carbon deposits, resins, paper labels, aluminum labels, paint, rust, and many other common industrial soils.

Use on ferrous metals, glass, plastic, concrete, quarry tile and similar masonry floors, industrial wood-block floors, and other materials not affected by high alkalinity. Do NOT use on aluminum or other soft metals and alloys.

Typical Applications

... Cleaning vats, storage tanks, heat exchangers, process equipment and tank trucks by re-circulation or boil-out.
... Bottle washing.
... Parts cleaning. Use in soak tanks or spray washers. Recommended for all common methods
including electrolytic and ultrasonic cleaning.
... Floor cleaning of certain hard floors by conventional methods or autoscrub.

Composition & Performance Properties

Cardite #422 contains free hydroxide, chelating and sequestering agents, and a unique combination of anionic and non-ionic surfactants which provide:

... quick penetration, dispersion and emulsification of oily soils,
... free rinsing -- due to an exceptional reduction of surface tension,
... low foam at all temperatures; very low foam at 100F/38C and higher.

The liquid form of Cardite #422 makes it easier, safer and more efficient to use than powder compounds--a liquid can be fed thru a closed system directly from the shipping drum to the cleaning operation; it eliminates the hazardous mixing of alkaline powders with water; it can be automatically metered to deliver a consistently accurate dilution.

Properties & Hazard Classes

Recommended Use Dilutions

Dilute in water to suit the job. Quantity required depends on the quality and type of dirt, porosity of the surface, temperature, soak time allowed, and the degree of agitation applied by the cleaning method. Recommended per gallon of solution:

For floor cleaned regularly, for some water-base paints,
for light rust..........................................................................................
1 oz/gal = 1:127 water.
For most vats, interiors of tanks, heat exchangers, cookers,
bottle washers, other process equipment................................................
12 oz/gal = 1:10 water.
For removal of heavy, baked-on carbon; for cleaning heavily
coated heat exchangers; for removal of chemical resistant
coatings such as baked phenolic enamels on phosphatized steel.............
32 oz/gal = 1:3 water.

In recirculation systems, solution strength gradually decreases during use; add Cardite #422 as needed to raise to desired strength. A test kit is available for checking solution strength by simplified titration.

A solution of 1:10 water complies with the bottle-washing laws of most states.

Use Temperatures & Time Required

Many common soils can be removed "cold" at ambient temperatures. Baked-on carbon, heavy rust and good paints can be removed only at temperatures of 180F/82C or higher. For bottle washing, required temperature is normally specified by a government agency.

Some dirt is removed instantly on contact. The time required for equipment varies greatly; several hours may be required for severe conditions. Where speed is not important, fuel can frequently be saved by extending the time.

Cleaning Cost

A strong alkaline cleaner such as Cardite #422 is usually the lowest-cost cleaning material. In applications where solution is reused and more detergent is added as needed, the starting dilution has no effect on cleaning cost -- if more than necessary is used at start, solution will last longer before addition is needed.

In such applications, solution life can be prolonged by using filters in return lines, by removing sludge from bottom of tank and by skimming floating scum from top. When possible, cut costs by storing used solution in a holding tank and re-use.

Use Precautions
FOR INDUSTRIAL USE ONLY. KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN

Alkaline liquid, Contains caustic soda. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. In case of contact, flush with water for at least 15 minutes, for eyes get medical attention. Use rubber boots or water-proof soles if walked on, leather not adequate. Use rubber or neoprene glove for hand immersion; use safety goggles where needed. Rinse cleaned surfaces with potable water before contact with food or drink.
